Choosing the right harness for our dogs is not an easy task since there are a variety of choices out there and every dog is built differently. Also, different harnesses are built for different purposes.
When choosing a harness I like to look at 4 points. While testing this it's also a good idea to place pressure on the harness to simulate how it performs in the real world.
1. The harness allows unrestricted movement of the front legs. and does not get embedded in the armpit.
2. The dog can lift their head and put their nose on the ground while standing without the harness getting in the way. (Test this while there is pressure on the harness as well)
3. The D ring of the harness is below the dog's shoulders closer to the middle of the back. (Multiple D ring positions are a bonus)
4. Even when the harness is unclipped the dog can't pull forward (important to prevent accidents in case of equipment failure and it also shows the plastic clips are not carrying all the weight.
Its also important to think of how it is going to be used. Dogs that love playing in mud and water will do better with a nylon harness like the TT touch over a Xtra dog Flece harness, where as for dogs that are tracking through the bush a flece harness offers the extra support and comfort. Small dogs may be more comfortable in a soft breathable material if they are not going to get wet. Dogs with long coats may be better suited for a simple slip on or buckle rather than multiple clips that could trap their fur.
