Visitors Reactivity
Why dogs to react to visitors.
Having family and friends over should be a delightful experience, however for many dogs and owners, it can be stressful.
A family dog, barking, growling, lunging, or even attempting to bite when someone enters their home, can quickly turn a friendly gathering into a chaotic ordeal. This type of behavior often makes guests feel uncomfortable and causes stress for the dog and its owner.
Often people tend to tell the dog off to get them to stop the behavior or put them out of the home to avoid the issue, Sometimes with little dogs people may even lift them up and hand them to the guests in an attempt to familiarize them, however these tactics can often make the problem worse and often results in the behavior escalating.
There can be many reasons why your dog feels the need to react. Identifying the cause is important to help change the behavior.
Some of the reasons dogs act out are
Fear Stress and anxiety (FAS): An inherently timid, fearful or anxious dog can have their negative emotions amplified by the presence of a strange visitor. These dogs will benefit the most if you get them help from a professional Vet behaviorist.
Lack of early socialization: Dogs who may have missed out on early socilisation may react poorly towards strangers, particularly men, children, or people of certain ethnicities.
Territoriality: Does your dog perceive your home as their territory and feel the need to protect it?
Past Trauma: Did your dog have a negative experience with a stranger in the past?
